Elevate Your Space with Bookshelf Wealth

You might say there are only two types of people in the world: Those who love real, physical books and those who don’t.

I have long been in the first group and while I think nothing beats the tactile experience of flipping through the pages of a good book, I’m in the process of moving to a more minimized environment.

But because I grew up with a wealth of books, I have a deep appreciation for them and I still want to find the balance of living with them, without being overwhelmed by them.

Whether you have an extensive collection of books or want to display a more minimal collection, it’s all about using an approach known as ‘bookshelf wealth.’

What Is Bookshelf Wealth?

Recently, Martha Stewart highlighted the concept of ‘bookshelf wealth’ on her website.

This increasingly popular trend is all about maximizing your enjoyment of your cozy hobby by surrounding yourself with your cherished books. It’s the idea of using your book collection to transform your home into an ultra-personal, inviting retreat.

Just imagine walking into a beautifully designed room that features your favorite stories and sources of knowledge. That feeling is what bookshelf wealth is all about.

For me and my clients, bookshelf wealth is truly an ultimate form of luxury. It speaks of a ‘life well read,’ as it expresses the reader in you within an elegant, sophisticated aesthetic. It’s a way of highlighting something deeply meaningful and valuable to you without being at all showy.

My Own Experience With Bookshelf Wealth

With parents who were both teachers and bibliophiles, I grew up in a house filled with books and I definitely understand the intrinsic value they bring to a space. I’ve always loved living with my books, but now, as I get ready to plan my next move, I find myself questioning which books to keep and which to let go. It’s far from an easy process, as it feels like trying to decide which old friends to part with.

Many of my clients face the same dilemma even if they’re remaining in the same home. They’d love to display their beloved books but they don’t love the thought of sacrificing a clean, open look. Fortunately, with a little design magic, they can have their bookshelf wealth and enjoy uncluttered interiors, too!

The Essentials of Bookshelf Wealth

At its core, bookshelf wealth isn’t just about cramming books onto shelves; it’s about creating a beautifully curated statement in your space.

Having designed and arranged many bookshelves for clients over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t. Here are my thoughts about how to elevate your bookshelf game:

1. Choose Shelving That Suits Your Space

This one’s critical because you want your bookshelves to do more than just store your books. You also want the shelves themselves to contribute something to your space.

Of course, built-in bookshelves are a wonderful option that can really transform a room. I love to custom design built-ins for my clients, creating practical solutions, like closed storage and lit shelves to ideally suit their needs and the space.

Incorporating architectural details like paneled sections, arched tops, and custom moldings into your built-ins can elevate your bookshelves to the next level, making the entire room sing.

2. Closed vs. Open Shelving

Should you opt for closed cabinetry to hide your books, or keep them all on display? In many cases, I like a combination of open shelves and cabinets so we can tuck away any books that aren’t as aesthetically pleasing or that simply don’t fit in with the others.

In some cases, we can even incorporate a second use within the shelving, such as a bar area (like the one I created in a client’s dining room) or a spot for a record player and vinyl collection.

3. Add Personal Touches

Unless you want a books-only look and you have enough books to completely fill your shelves, you’ll want to incorporate a few decorative elements into the mix. I love using vases, potted plants, framed photos, and a variety of objets d’art–anything that’s lovely to look at and adds something to the space like color, texture, shape, etc.

If they are going to show behind the books, I often like to wallpaper or paint the backs of the shelves to add depth and character. Wood paneling can be a wonderful option for this, as well.

Finally, adding a well-placed lamp or a soft spotlight can make your shelves look intentionally designed and ‘finished.’

The Perfect Reading Nook

Bookshelf wealth just isn’t complete without a cozy reading nook. Whether you love a plush chair or a cushioned window seat, be intentional about creating a spot to curl up with your favorite book. Be sure to add decorative pillows and a soft throw for extra comfort.

I also recommend placing a table within easy reach of your seat so you can set down a drink and your book.

Of course, good lighting is essential. Layering the light in the space with a mix of ceiling fixtures, wall sconces, and table lamps is ideal to create a cozy ambiance. Just be sure to include a lamp right next to the seat for task lighting.
