When I’m designing a home, one of my first sources of inspiration is often right outside the window. The colors, textures, and moods of the surrounding landscape can guide everything from the overall color palette to the smaller details like artwork and accessories. This approach doesn’t just create a cohesive design—it makes the home feel deeply connected to its setting and even more personal to the people who live there.
Taking Inspiration from Nature, Not Matching It
One of the biggest misconceptions about using nature as a design reference is that you’re trying to “match” what’s outside. That’s not the goal. Instead, it’s about taking cues—pulling inspiration from the tones and textures of the surroundings.

This might mean incorporating soft greens and warm browns inspired by nearby trees or using a deep, muted blue reminiscent of the sky at dusk. These choices create a visual dialogue between the home’s interior and its environment, drawing the eye out and then back in.
Color in Neutral Spaces
For homes with neutral foundations—think soft whites, pale oaks, or even deeper browns and taupes—nature-inspired palettes can add a dynamic layer of interest.
A neutral base allows bold artwork or colorful textiles to truly shine. If your home is open and airy, with big windows that frame the outdoors, even small pops of color can make a big impact.
Artwork is one of the easiest ways to experiment with color in these spaces. A painting that incorporates tones from the view outside, such as the cool greens of vineyards or the warm oranges of fall foliage, can anchor a room.
From there, you can layer in accessories like pillows, throws, or rugs that repeat those colors in complementary shades.
Anchoring with Color
To ensure a cohesive feel, I often look for an “anchor” piece—a rug, countertop, or textile that incorporates multiple tones of a color. This not only gives the design direction but also makes it easier to introduce subtle variations of that color in other parts of the home. For example, the natural stone countertop shown below will be used in a client project to inspire accent choices throughout the home.
Where to Start with Color
If you’re drawn to bolder colors but unsure where to start, the easiest entry point is through accessories. Pillows, vases, and even a single accent chair in a rich hue can transform the feel of a space without a huge commitment. For the more adventurous, an accent wall or cabinetry in a saturated color can add a sense of drama while still feeling grounded if the tones echo the home’s surroundings.
The Emerging Color Trend
It’s worth noting that color is making a strong comeback in interior design. After years of neutral, monochromatic spaces dominating the scene, we’re seeing homeowners craving personality and vibrancy. That doesn’t mean abandoning subtlety—it means being intentional about how and where to introduce color so that it enhances the space without overwhelming it.
When you layer in color thoughtfully, you allow it to tell a story. It’s about finding the balance between what excites you and what feels timeless—an approach I believe creates a home you’ll love living in for years to come.

Designing with colors inspired by nature is about more than aesthetics. It’s about creating spaces that feel connected to their environment and grounded in their purpose. By taking cues from the landscapes of Marin and Sonoma Counties, we can design homes that feel truly at home in their settings—beautiful, functional, and reflective of the people who live there.
